The Board of Education has approved the following calendars for the 2012/2013 schoo year:

Monday is a regular school day for elementary schools in Davis. It is a teacher-work day for secondary schools only and is a regular school day at Korematsu.

Reminder: Academic Talent Search Forms Due Tomorrow Morning!

This is a reminder that the Academic Talent Search qualifying exams are coming up for 4th-6th graders. The office has not yet received enough applications for our school to qualify as a testing location, so if you are planning on having your child take the exams so they can sign up for the summer programs, please turn in the form tomorrow morning at the latest or the test may be canceled.

ATS is a non-profit program that offers over 120 courses each summer in both tradition and non-tradition subjects.

Students are eligible to take the ATS qualifying Exam at Korematsu Elementary School on either of the following dates:

January 18th @ 1:45, Library or
February 15th, @ 1:45, Library

Information and Sign-up forms will be sent out this week but, are also attached for your convenience. ATS will waiver the testing fee for eligible students.

Please turn in sign-up form into the office.

Powell Family and Community Partner To Win $100,000 For Davis Schools!!

New California Booster Seat Laws in Effect

Changes to California’s current car-seat law are now in effect as of Jan. 1. The new law requires all kids 8 years old and younger to be in a booster or car seat unless they are 4 feet 9 inches or taller.

The former law required children 6 years and younger weighing 60 pounds or less to be seated in a child safety seat.

Safety advocates believe upping the age to 8 will prevent some neck and liver injuries for children not tall enough to be in a standard seat belt. The only exception to the new law is that children 4 feet 9 inches and taller will be allowed to use a seatbelt without a booster even if under the age of eight.

Find out more about car and booster seat safety and current ratings on the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration website. You can also make an appointment to have any questions answered or yours installed for free at a CHP office close to you.

Some tips include:

Right size for child: there are husky seats available for bigger kids
Belt should be across hips not stomach
Shoulder belt should be across shoulder, not neck
Low backseats? CHP suggests a high-back booster to protect head

On Thursday, December 8, a student returning from an after school play date on their bicycle was followed by a white pick-up truck. This occurred a little before dark around 5pm on Cowell Blvd. near Burnett Place in South Davis. The truck’s side windows were darkly tinted, but the windshield was not. The truck had a black stripe on its side and only one hubcap on the back wheel of the driver’s side. The driver was male and appeared to be in his late 20’s or early thirties. He had black hair and darker skin. The Davis Police Department has been contacted. If you have any additional information about this incident, please contact the Davis Police at 530-758-3600.

Please impress upon your children to follow these basic rules when walking to or from school:

Do not talk to strangers, even if they know your name!
Always walk directly to and from school using the same path everyday.
Always walk or ride your bike with a group of friends.
Run directly to school or home if you are approached by a stranger.
Immediately notify a school official or parent if you are approached by a stranger.

Camine siempre directamente cuando va y viene de la escuela a su casa usando la misma ruta.
Camine o monte siempre su bici con un grupo de amigos.
Directamente reporte al oficial de la escuela o a sus padres si una persona que no conoce se acerca.

Reminder for Kindergarten Parents

Please remember Oral Health Assessment forms are due by the end of December. If your child has seen the dentist in the last 12 months you may have the form filled out by his/her dentist.

Also please remember to turn in your child’s physical examination form. The exam may not be more than 6 months before your child started Kindergarten in August.

Both forms were part of the registration packet given to all parents. If you need another form please obtain one from your school’s office or on the DJUSD website.
