The former law required children 6 years and younger weighing 60 pounds or less to be seated in a child safety seat.

Safety advocates believe upping the age to 8 will prevent some neck and liver injuries for children not tall enough to be in a standard seat belt. The only exception to the new law is that children 4 feet 9 inches and taller will be allowed to use a seatbelt without a booster even if under the age of eight.

Find out more about car and booster seat safety and current ratings on the National Highway Traffic Safety Adminstration website. You can also make an appointment to have any questions answered or yours installed for free at a CHP office close to you.

Some tips include:

1. Right size for child: there are husky seats available for bigger kids
2. Belt should be across hips not stomach
3. Shoulder belt should be across shoulder, not neck
4. Low backseats? CHP suggests a high-back booster to protect head

Also please remember to turn in your child’s physical examination form. The exam may not be more than 6 months before your child started Kindergarten in August.

Both forms were part of the registration packet given to all parents. If you need another form please obtain one from your school’s office or on the DJUSD website.

As PTA members [Editor's note: the letter was written generically to every PTA/PTO in the district; as you know, we're a PTO not a PTA. Our status has not changed.], I would like to invite you to participate in DJUSD’s Nutrition Advisory Committee. The committee meets just four times per academic year and is tasked with helping create strategies to improve access and quality of food and beverages sold and served in DJUSD schools. The committee focuses on: child nutrition programs, policies, and regulations; district facilities and equipment; fiscal implications; and overall nutrition education goals to promote student wellness.

As a partner to DJUSD, Davis Farm to School has been tasked with reaching out to a broader audience of community members and DJUSD families to join the committee. Please let me know if you are interested! The flyer and application form are attached. Please feel free to extend the invitation to others who might be interested!

Attention parents of 6th grade students:

The second phase of the new school immunization law requires all students entering 7th grade in the 2012-2013 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called Tdap.

Pertussis is a very contagious respiratory disease that can be severe and last for months. The immunity received from either early childhood immunization or pertussis disease wears off over time, leaving older students and adults susceptible again to pertussis. Immunization with Tdap can protect students, schools and communities against pertussis. Please bring a copy of your student’s Tdap record to the office as soon as you have taken care of this requirement. A waiver is available upon request.

Testing to determine GATE eligibility will be offered to any interested student at the DJUSD District Office, 526 B Street, for the following grade levels:

• 3rd graders: Only if absent during Universal Testing, new to the district, or who live in the school district but do not attend public schools, may test on Jan. 11th at 2:00pm
• 4th and 6th graders: Nov. 16th, Dec. 7th, 14th, or Jan. 18th, at 2:00pm

If a student is already qualified for GATE they do not need to requalify.
